On April 26th 1986, one of the four reactors at the Chernobyl power plant in the Ukraine exploded, spreading nuclear contamination all over the surrounding area and crossing boundaries into other countries. Many people who were at the plant trying to get the situation under control died from radiation poisoning within a few weeks of the accident, and those hired to clean up the Chernobyl accident had similar problems as they did not have proper protection available.

The Pripyat amusement park was due to open for the May Day celebrations on 1st May 1986, indeed some of the decorations are still in place to this day.
The park was opened for a couple of hours on the 27th, a day after the accident, to keep the population entertained before the decision was finally made to evacuate.

Pripyat Hospital 126 took a large proportion of the radiation flowing over the town, positioned in the South East of the town and closest to the nuclear plant.
For a long time the basement of the hospital was one of the most radioactive parts of the town after the firefighters overalls were dumped inside when they came from the reactor for severe radiation sickness treatment. There the suites remained, the radiation contained by the thick concrete hospital foundations until eventually they were cleaned up over 20 years later.

Middle School No. 3 is probably the most visited of the middle schools in Pripyat, famous for the number of gas masks strewn over the floor of the canteen.
Discarded books litter the classrooms, even jars of preserved fruits sit in science labs still protected by the formaldehyde solution inside.

The gas masks are infact less sinister than they first appear. Every adult and child had a gas mask available due to the high value nature of the target the power plant might be during the cold war.

However in my opinion the most distressing locations in Pripyat are the multitude of kindergartens in the town, still full of discarded and forgotten toys, shoes, beds, and more.
These images are from both The Golden Key and Cheburashka kindergartens.

The Olympic-sized swimming pool with it's iconic diving board is another very recognisable image from the town, location in the sports hall near the Middle School No. 3.

Yanov Train Station was the vital pick-up point for those arriving into Pripyat in the hours after the NCPP disaster.
The trains are heavily irradiated but due to their size they have yet to be removed and buried with the other aid vehicles used in the clean-up.

After the Chernobyl accident a vast number of vehicles were used around the site to aid with the clean-up. Buryakovka is the graveyard for those non-military vehicles such as trucks, cranes, bulldozers, helicopters, and more.
The vast majority of vehicles have already been buried due to their extremely high radioactivity, but it is a slow process because of the quantity of vehicles effected and the short periods of time you can safely spend around them.
